Superstar by The Carpenters

What do you think?

Superstar is the story of a band groupie who holds a strong love for a musician. After a short affair, he has moved on to the next town. She is alone, waiting and yearning for a return that will never come. Despite his promises to see her again, the music on the radio is all she has left.

The song was written in 1969 by Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett who released it as a B-side. Versions by Cher and Bette Midler in the early 1970’s were never really successful. The most famous version is by The Carpenters, probably because of the way Karen Carpenter depicts the deep longing and loneliness in her voice.

Lyrics

Long ago, and, oh, so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear
But you’re not really here, it’s just the radio
Don’t you remember, you told me you loved me baby?
You said you’d be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh baby
I love you, I really do
Loneliness is such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait to be with you again
What to say to make you come again?
Come back to me again and play your sad guitar
Don’t you remember, you told me you loved me baby?
You said you’d be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh baby
I love you, I really do
Don’t you remember, you told me you loved me baby?
You said you’d be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh baby
I love you, I really do
