The White Cliffs Of Dover by Vera Lynn

What do you think?
White Cliffs of Dover

The White Cliffs of Dover was written in 1941 by Walter Kent and Nat Burton. The Battle of Britain had been raging for around a year between British and German aircraft over southern England, especially around the Dover area.

Plenty of artists and groups performed the song during World War Two, but the most famous version was by Vera Lynn. Vera Lynn was one of the most popular singers of the 1940’s. She travelled to many war zones where British soldiers were stationed to entertain and boost their morale.

Lyrics

There’ll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow
Just you wait and see
I’ll never forget the people I met
Braving those angry skies
I remember well as the shadows fell
The light of hope in their eyes
And though I’m far away
I still can hear them say
Bombs up…
But when the dawn comes up
There’ll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow
Just you wait and see
There’ll be love and laughter
And peace ever after
Tomorrow
When the world is free
The shepherd will tend his sheep
The valley will bloom again
And Jimmy will go to sleep
In his own little room again
There’ll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow
Just you wait and see
there’ll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow
Just you wait and see…
